Okay, so this novelette is something out of the usual run of “marriages in trouble”- type books that are usually seen, but again, on the other hand, it is also an ordinary story of a stable marriage seemingly headed for a dismal “ever after”. Jeff and Debi are an ordinary married couple and after several years of marriage they appear to be very unhappy.As I read the first chapter I was hoping that wasn’t indicative of what the whole book would be like. I wasn’t sure I could read even a novelette where the husband spoke to his wife without once calling her by her name, instead saying ‘hey’, or even the demeaning ‘Woman’. I almost stopped reading but thought I would read a bit more to see what happened as the first chapter WAS well-written and showed a touch of mystery when a very expensive-looking diamond ring is delivered to the house, with a romantic note enclosed. I am NOT giving away “spoilers” as this can be read in the sample.
The second chapter seemed more of the same, but a touch of humour was slipped in and then some real sadness and I was hooked. Mind you, I would have used something much harder to beat Jeff with than the article Debi thought of – an old-fashioned carpet beater springs to mind. After that, the story seemed to take off under its own steam and it headed into … unusual realms of mystery as Debi and her friend, Jenny try to discover who could have sent the ring. The results of some of their inquiries are hilarious and I admired their persistence.
All-in-all, this is a well-written and edited story, laced with humour, sadness, misunderstandings, friendship, heartache, and love. In fact, just like real life marriages and lives. I am glad I persevered with it.

I love Donna Shepherd's kids books, so when I found out she had written a novella I couldn't wait to check it out! I sat down to read this last night and read it straight through in one evening. I laughed, I sniffled, I got mad at the husband in the story and wanted to thump him upside the head. But, Donna brought it all to a satisfying conclusion that had me sighing in satisfaction. If you're looking for a cute, clean love story to snuggle up with, this is it!
My Look
With a pressure filled life, a recently disabled husband, and the shine dulled on her fifteen-year marriage, a mysterious package arrives to provide a pleasing distraction from Debi's problems.
However, the item laying under the bubble wrap is something she couldn't imagine and she doesn't know who would send it. Debi believes it a fake stone, but she brings it to someone she trusts for evaluation. Her friend, Jenny, works at a local jeweler and she determines the diamond is real!
Jenny's taking the ring for an appraisal and Debi is dying to know its worth.
These two start hatching a plan to uncover the sender. Could it be Debi's husband? No. Jeff knew about the ring and even doubted it was real. Nope. Besides, he's a tightwad with money, but she knew they can not even afford a gem like this. Their list is short even minus Jeff. Joe is a neighbor who is always staring at her, an old boyfriend who was more a friend than beau, and a coworker who always seems to be around.
Jenny takes the lead and starts contacting their suspects, while Debi starts wondering if she should be doing this at all. Soon, Debi finds she needs to do this and cannot even explain to herself why.
My Take
LOVE UNDER THE BUBBLE WRAP-A NOVELETTE by Donna J. Shepherd isn't a chick lit read. However, this hen lit title shines a spotlight on the middle of a marriage through a woman in the middle of a life where things haven't gone as planned.
Anyone in a relationship who has ever hit upon one of life's snags will relate to Debi and will laugh at the lengths she goes to solve her personal mystery. Debi's a woman on the hunt--who doesn't always see the forest through the trees--but she learns in the process, when she meets a Christian counselor. This man has given her a few things to think about and explains why the need to find the giver even exists inside her.
Donna J. Shepherd gives us a "real life" love story! Though short, this novelette provides a fleshed out story with curious characters and a satisfying ending. Her other works include devotionals, children's stories, and poems. ***Though the author provides the free ebook, I offer the opinion.***
Quick read with a lot of fun and some real emotions. It did not surprise me to see a story with fun and humor sewn into it, but I was surprised by some of the raw emotions revealed in how the main character deals with her husband's recent disabilities. Those parts made me cry, and I loved watching the character learn about herself and her husband as the story progressed.
In brief, the story follows the main character from the moment she receives a mystery gift to the moment she discovers who sent it. With the help of her best friend, main character Debi seeks answers in current strangers and past acquaintances as she tries to solve the mystery of her secret admirer. Not that she's miserable with her not-so-secret love in the form of her husband, but the teenager within certainly likes the idea that someone's love for her flickers beyond the bounds of common, everyday marital love. Even with no intention to act on it, the desire to know who loves her this way spurs her to continue looking into a variety of possible suitors.
In addition to the mystery gift, Debi is busy solving the mystery at home as to why her husband has changed so much since his back surgery. She also spends time examining her own motives and feelings to discover some she's not too comfortable with. At the same time, she even spends a little time playing matchmaker for her best friend.
I will say, the ending gave me a happy surprise, and I hope Donna can put together some more short length "hen lit" stories like this. I like something I can enjoy and read within a few days, even if it takes me a few months to open the cover initially.
